Why Use Duna "Corafoam" ?

High Density Urethane (HDU)

Duna's Corafoam brand of HDU is often used for dimensional signs that are routed, sandblasted or hand carved. They are then painted, gold leafed or have vinyl applied to them. You often see this type of sign at a city's limits when entering a town that says something to the effect of " Welcome to .....". They are also seen on high end businesses that would present a nostalgic or very professional look. Sometimes they appear to be made of wood, but the wood grain is actually sand blasted, hand carved or routed into the Corafoam.

Corafoam is very dimensionally stable, so it does not expand or contract much with temperature changes. It also will not rot like wood signs when properly finished. The Corafoam substrate could last a lifetime if properly finished. although the paint would have to be refurbished over time.

We stock Corafoam in both 15lb and 20lb densities. 15lb is the most popular and works with most applications. If you are looking for more strength for things like signs where there could be more wear and tear or for "characters" or objects that are three dimensionally carved, the 20lb is better. Most suppliers just sell Corafoam in 4' x 8' sheets, but we are happy to sell smaller sizes for your sign making needs.

Why use Corafoam over other brands of HDU? There are many reasons:

  • Corafom is harder than other HDU sign foams . This means you can hold a sharper edge when routing.

  • Corafoam has a smaller cell structure, so it requires less primmer than other HDU brands.

  • Corafoam routes with less dust than most other sign foams.

  • Customers that hand carve Corafoam repeatedly say that it carves like "Basswood"

  • Corafoam is stronger. It has a higher flexural, compressive and screw retention strength than other sign foams.

Be sure to study, and use widely excepted industry practice for mounting and securing Corafoam. There are lots of ways to make sure your Corafoam sign lasts a lifetime.
